Department of Mathematics Education

Our department started providing education within the university in 1982. The language of education continued in English until 1997, and then the language of education became Turkish. In addition, the Mathematics Education Department of the Department of Primary Education was established in 1998 within the Department of Primary Education of Marmara University Atatürk Faculty of Education and started to accept students in the 1998-1999 academic year. With the latest changes regarding education faculties, education is provided in two different programs within the Department of Mathematics and Science Education, Department of Mathematics Education. The primary aim of the department is to train mathematics teachers for middle schools and high schools. Students who graduate with a bachelor's degree at the end of the four-year program can be appointed as mathematics teachers in secondary schools and high schools, as well as enter Master's and Doctoral programs in mathematics education departments of universities' institutes and become academicians in these fields. The vision of our department is to train teachers who have strong field knowledge and pedagogical formation, are researchers, can think critically, are self-confident and have universal teacher competencies. After graduation, students of the Department of Mathematics Education work as "Primary Mathematics Teachers" or "Mathematics Teachers" in secondary and high schools. The majority of the more than a thousand students it has graduated so far are working as mathematics teachers or administrators in secondary schools, colleges and private education institutions affiliated with the Ministry of National Education. However, many graduates continue their academic careers by receiving master's and doctoral studies at home or abroad, depending on their interests and orientation. Among our graduates, there are also those who work as research assistants or lecturers at different universities.

Our department's vision is to lead the transformation of education into social welfare by training teachers who will be successful all over Turkey, who know how to learn and teach well, and who do this job fondly. With this aim and vision, our Department provides education at 3 different levels: Undergraduate, Master's and Doctorate, which is opened for the first time in Turkey. In addition, both of our programs are certified by the Teacher Education Programs Evaluation and Accreditation Association (EPDAD).
As a result of the detailed review carried out by , it was accredited for 3 years starting from 15.05.2020.

It would be beneficial for our students who are considering enrolling in an undergraduate program and who are currently enrolled, to carefully review the undergraduate regulations. Many student forms, event announcements and up-to-date information about our faculty can be accessed on our faculty website.

Our department attaches importance to student-lecturer-university cooperation and communication. For this purpose, a student representative for each class is elected by the students. In addition, two of our students who are successful in their courses, have high communication skills and are hardworking, work as part-time students in our Department.
